Reinhard Hardegen U-123
(Summary)
Captain Reinhard Hardegen was the 24th most successful German submarine commander in the Kriegsmarine.
Of
his exploits he's notably remembered for his successes during
Operation Drumbeat, (basically a one sided attack)
against
the East Coast of the U.S. The five U-boats that
independently attacked merchant shipping created havoc,
death and
mayhem until the USN could deal with adequate coastal protection.
Its incredible to imagine the
close proximity of these
U-boats to the New York City Skyline as the crew identified moving cars
and bright city lights!
Hardegen died June 9 2018 in Bremen, Germany where he was born and raised. He was 105 years old.
